Yelp recently announced new features including custom search filters, a new review flow, themed ads and Project Cost Guides.
Optimising the search experience for services businesses, Yelp is helping users hire professionals in an easier format. For instance, when a user searches for popular services, they will find custom search filters to help them refine their search.
Another new feature for services businesses is the search ads. Current themes include highlighting “fast-responding” businesses that reply to Request-A-Quote projects within a couple of hours. Businesses are selected to appear in themed ads based on their unique offerings and the kinds of jobs they specialise in. There is no additional cost to be highlighted in themed ads, but Yelp plans to introduce additional themes soon.
Themed ads may provide more visibility for businesses that fall into one of the themes Yelp offers. Additionally, businesses featured in “fast responding” themed ads saw a nearly 10 per cent decrease in cost per lead, according to Yelp data. Additionally, when customers submit a project with Yelp’s Request-A-Quote, the platform will now use the submitted information to prompt users to write reviews.

Yelp also launched a Project Cost Guides program that provides information and tips on what hiring a professional for a project might require.
The guides share information on the average cost of services in a specific area, along with a local guide that provides helpful tips and cost-saving strategies. There are unique cost guides available across nearly 20 categories, more than 90 service offerings, across 150 cities.
“Service businesses with Request-A-Quote enabled, regardless of advertiser status, are shown at the bottom of Yelp Project Cost Guide pages,” Akhil Kuduvalli Ramesh, Yelp’s VP of consumer product said, “We are leveraging valuable data and information from businesses to help inform which services businesses appear, including a business’s average response time, if they’ve indicated Business Highlights, have a Verified License, and more.”
