The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has launched a new AI-powered app to help visually impaired make-up users.

The Voice-Enabled Makeup Assistant (VMA) is a “first-of-its-kind” creation driven by ELC’s AR and AI technology. It uses voice instruction to guide users, offering feedback on whether their makeup is evenly and accurately applied.

Using AI and machine learning, the app identifies the makeup on the user’s face and assesses its uniformity and boundaries. It then identifies and communicates any areas which may require more attention.

According to the NHS, more than 2 million people live with sight loss. Of those, 340,000 are registered as blind or partially-sighted. ELC says the VMA app was developed “while connecting with visually-impaired people” to help deliver more independence for them.

“We are committed to building innovative technology solutions that make beauty truly inclusive to everyone,” said ELC Chief Information Officer Michael Smith. “We are thrilled to bring the experience of independently applying makeup to the millions of people that are visually impaired.

ELC UK & Ireland Executive Director, Corporate Cultural Relevancy and Inclusion and Diversity Monica Rastogi added, “As a company, we are deeply committed to playing our part in creating an inclusive beauty industry. The launch of our Voice-Enabled Makeup Assistant is an important step in our journey towards makeup accessibility for all by removing barriers to engaging with beauty products and services.”

The app will launch initially in the UK via the Apple App Store and at esteelauder.co.uk. Further rollout is planned “within the year.”
