Discord has acquired ‘Ubiquity6 ‘, which was founded as an AR (Augmented Reality) startup and has recently shifted its focus to online sharing experiences. The two companies didn’t share any financial details about the deal.

Ubiquity6 founder Anjney Midha tweeted, ‘I’m very happy to be able to create the future with Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevsky (Discord co-founder).’

Ubiquity6 started out as an AR startup, developing a kind of Instagram for photogrammetry called Displayland. More recently, Ubiquity6 pivoted from AR to shared online experiences with a new app called Backyard that can best be described as a more playful take on video chat, complete with integrated mini games.

Ubiquity6 website now reads, “Our mission at Ubiquity6 has always been to unlock new ways for people to connect through shared experiences. Joining Discord today allows us to accelerate that mission — Ubiquity6’s team, Backyard product and multiplayer technology will be integrated into Discord.

While we’re excited to reveal more about what we’re building together at Discord in the future, today is a chance for us to celebrate all the incredible people who’ve helped us get here.”

Discord, a popular group-chatting app, was originally made to give gamers a place to build communities and talk.

But since its launch in 2015, it has branched out to include communities from all over the internet, ranging from writers to artists to K-Pop stans. It has boomed in popularity during the pandemic, as more people have worked, played games, and socialised online, and the platform says it now has more than 140 million active monthly users.
